SPOTLIGHT | AUSHUA
They're back and ready to limbo? Not really but Santa Ana's Aushua is releasing a new EP called "Limbo" and next month are going on a national tour where they will be playing with Nightmare of You. Aushua is Nathan Gammill (lead vocals and guitar) and three brothers (I'm noticing a three brothers trend in bands lately) Phil Newyear (base), Eric Newyear (guitar) and Lee Newyear (drums). The band will have their EP release show at Detroit Bar with Long Beach's We Barbarians and LA's Red Cortez. The show will also be the start of their national tour, where they will head to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and start to make their way to the east coast. Better send them off right. I'm thinking limbo party at the EP release show on July 11 at Detroit Bar. Who's with me?
Now, enjoy some Aushua.
When and how did the band get together?
AUSHUA: Nathan (lead vocals and guitar) and Phil (base) had met in a previous band, then left to form a new one. After getting pretty fed up with trying to find other musicians Phil just asked his brothers to move back to California, drop out of college, and be in the band... no sweat. But, they did. We still didn't have a singer, so eventually Nathan just swore he would do it, even though he hadn't really sang before. That's the really quick version.
Where did the band play their first show in Orange County and when?
AUSHUA: First show was at Chain Reaction. We had changed our name from "Mere" to "Aushua" right before the show. Lee (drums) had just gotten in the band a week prior.
What do you think makes your band different from other bands out there?
AUSHUA: One of the only things I could think of, besides that we've never been "cool" (which may be good or bad, depending on who you ask), is our beats and rhythms. Most groups have their rock beats, they do half-time,Ê some even do the "boots-n-cats" indie-dance beats, but we're flirting with shuffles and poly-rhythms, and even straight soul and hip-hop beats if you break them down. I guess that's what sticks out to me.
What song do you think the band is most recognized for? And why do you think that? (I'm assuming "No Harm Done")
AUSHUA: Well, "No Harm Done" is easiest to enjoy from afar, but, for the people that come to the shows I think there is a lot more to grab at. For instance, something happens when we play "Sister Saves," you know... We get a lot of head-shaking to the tune of "That last song man... Man... Just, that last song..." Speechlessness is always the most fulfilling compliment.
How do you think we can get Orange County's music scene more happening?
AUSHUA: Let there be more venues! Instead of the dinosaurs and the big guns making sure no new venues come up by ratting them all out, just let the free market go! Instead of just watching places like the Clinic go under, it would have been great if other venues could step in and give their assistance. There is a great music scene here, it's just hard to find. We can't keep track of it.
Everyone has something that makes them unique. How would you describe in a few words each member in the band. Any nicknames?
AUSHUA:
Eric: Calm, Quiet, Lights things on Fire.
Phil: Good at Life, Unemployed.
Lee: Loyal, always makes a good case for his correctness.
Nathan: Not so good at life, opinionated to a fault.
When will the new record be released and how will it differ from your music that is out now?
AUSHUA: Well, we made a six-song EP that comes out on July 11 (with a release show/party at the Detroit Bar that night). We feel it's a good segue into where we are headed. Also, we've never really been keen on choruses, and now I don't even think there is a single "true" chorus on this record, if there we're such a thing.
Tell us about your upcoming tour.
AUSHUA: We travel out to New York with a band called Nightmare Of You, they've been in music for a while and we are excited to meet them, and open for them. We make our way back out here with a new band called Middle Distance Runner, whom we are also very exited to share the stage with. Through both of those, I think we hit pretty much every major city in the states.
