ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | THE COLOURIST
Coming out of the shadows this past summer, Costa Mesa-based The Colourist made us ask, "Where the heck have they been hiding?!" There's no doubt you will fall in love with this indie rock group's poppy undertones and catchy lyrics. In July, the band released their first self-titled EP at the Yost Theater and since then it has been getting quite the buzz. The E! Network took notice and the band's music made a television debut with "Yes, Yes" on "Keeping Up With The Kardashians: The Wedding." The Colourist tends to spread out their shows and of course it's worth the wait to see them and they obviously pack the house.

ALBUM REVIEW | OCTOBER 21, 1976
Artist: Billy Kernkamp
This is why OC's music scene is great: musicians here collaborate and work with one another to create beautiful music. Billy Kernkamp's first full-length album is proof of that. The compilation of songs is diversified by quite a few well-known local musicians, including Justin Grennan, Trisha Smith of Honey Pie, Johnny Hanson of Melanoid, Justin Suitor of Railroad To Alaska, Jameson of Echo Echo and a few more talented artists. "It's a huge collaboration," Kernkamp says.

SONG REVIEW | "EVERY SONG"
Artist: Argyle Smile
In Anaheim, there is a band that you would probably never expect to reside there. This band is a nice bunch of characters that quietly strum ukuleles and lightly hit a glockenspiel. They're called Argyle Smile. The five-some is Jared "Jare-Bear" Parsons (vocals, ukulele and guitar), Dana "Bo Bana" Chambers (vocals, autoharp, glockenspiel, shakers and tambourine), Nicholas "Captain" Gehris (keys), Jon "Onion Steak" Stoleto (bass) and Jeff "J-Ram" Ramirez (drums). A song that is definitely one of the best released by a local artist last year goes to Argyle Smile's "Every Song."

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR SIX BANDS IN JANUARY'S BEST LIVE BAND SHOWCASE
1) What is so unique about OC's music scene?
Johnny Hanson (lead vocals and guitar) of Melanoid:
"I'm not sure how unique the scene is in OC, but I think you are only as unique as your music is. It is great having a network of musicians out here I can hang with, but I think this is true of any music scene."

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR FIVE MUSICIANS/BANDS IN JANUARY'S BEST ACOUSTIC BAND SHOWCASE
1) What is so unique about Orange County's music scene?
Barrett Johnson (singer-songwriter):
"There are so many good musicians in Orange County. I am very thankful to know and be friends with so many talented people. One unique thing in Orange County is Zion Studios. I don't know anyone who can produce and arrange like Dallas Kruse. Sitting in on sessions he has arranged with first chair LA Philharmonic string players has been incredible. I'll definitely be doing my next album with him. He currently sits in with at least six or seven bands around LA and Orange County and more people are starting to find out about him."
