SONG REVIEW | "BIRDS AND STUFF"
Artist: The New Limb
By Ashley Eliot
KUCI Promotions Director &
Host of Press Pass Music
The New Limb are really not like any other band in Orange County. On top of being a group of talented and true musicians, they have the personality and drive to make it in this tough industry. And it's not just because they bake cookies for fans, welcome you with hugs after only meeting them once, put a couch on the roof of their house, do a stellar cover of "The Weight" and have the lovely Lauren on keys. They are always thinking around-the-clock about other ways to creatively reach the audience, whether it's designing and distributing innovative business cards for promoting purposes, creating promo videos for shows or eagerly participating in our local music scene. Costa Mesa-based, The New Limb experienced a roller coaster of good buzz this past year. They were named OC Weekly's Best Live Band of 2009 and for those of you who have seen them perform live, then you know they deserve the recognition. Now, with their anticipated first full-length album "Sounds People Can Hear" wrapping up and due for release in late March, the band is in for another exciting year.
The record will have some reinvented old tracks and some new tracks. One song in particular has been getting lots of attention. "Birds and Stuff" (most people know it as "Birds" but the band recently changed the name) is a duet with Joey Chavez (lead vocals and guitar) and Lauren Salamone (keys and vocals). I've seen the band perform it live and acoustic, but the recorded version blew my mind. Lauren's delicate vocals shine and the whole song is a burst of fresh air. It's the type of song you'll put on repeat and listen to it all day-long and still want to listen to it again the next day and the next day and so on. This is just a taste of what to expect on the next album and if you haven't heard the song, you can check The New Limb out at the OC Music Awards Best Live Band Showcase at The Gypsy Lounge on Feb. 16.
