SPOTLIGHT | DUSTY RHODES AND THE RIVER BAND

By Ashley Eliot
KUCI Promotions Director &
Host of Press Pass Music

For those of you who know Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, you're probably aware that the band seems like they're from a different time and place. Though based in Fullerton, the band has a southern flare that distinguishes them from other artists out there. And performance wise they are an explosion of collaboration and diversity, bringing in violins, an organ and everyone sharing their voice to bring a powerful energy to their music. Dustin Apodaca (vocals and keys) acts as the "preacher man," leading them in an entertaining live show that pulls you deep into the band's world. Dusty Rhodes and The River Band's last album "Palace and Stage" still has fans talking and now the band is recording a new record that we will hopefully be adding to our iPod soon. The band will be playing in the OC Music Awards Best Live Band Showcase and the other bands better look out because they're in for some heavy competition. Currently, finishing up a mini-tour, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band's Kyle Divine (guitar and vocals) found some time while on the road to tell us what is going on and what we can expect from them.

1) What do you love most about Fullerton? Where can you most likely be found there?

I like $1 taco days! That is what I love most about Fullerton. There is this great taco place near our house and they serve delicious $1 tacos on the weekend. It's great. I don't really go out much other than that. We spend a lot of time at the band house practicing and hanging out.

2) In just a few words, how would you describe your music?

Small to mid-size arena rock. Fun/energetic/spastic.

3) What has someone said about your music that has stuck with you?

There was an All Music Guide review of "Palace and Stage" that spoke very highly of my singing. That stuff is always nice to hear, especially from such a credible source of music criticism. We're still waiting to hear from Pitchfork.

4) The band has a high-energy and natural stage presence. Was it always like that?

From day one we've always tried to pour our hearts and souls into the live show and people respond well to it.

5) What has been your most memorable show and why?

Shows all start to blur together after a few hundred, I think we're almost up to 500 shows in our eight-year career. Our most memorable tour was in the UK with Dirty Pretty Things. It was sweet. We got to travel the country in a van with a driver and play in front of sold out crowds of 1,000 or more people each night. Those British kids really enjoy American music. In Liverpool they were chanting "USA" after we finished our set. Crazy!

6) What makes Orange County a great place to create music?

Nothing really. It's just where we all happen to live. I think we'd still be cranking out music no matter where we lived.

7) What is something about each member in the band that we would be surprised about? And any nicknames?

Edson was born and raised in Brazil and speaks Portugese! Eric is a pervert. Brad and Dre are siblings. I'm missing almost two feet of small intestine. And Dustin was raised by wolves. (Everything's true except for that last one)

8) If you could open up for any band, who would it be and why?

Right now, I'd say The Flaming Lips just because we're huge fans and they seem like really down to earth people. It would have been sweet to open up for the The Beatles or The Beach Boys back in the day.

9) Who writes the lyrics or is it a collaborative effort?

Everyone in our band has written or helped write lyrics at one time or another.

10) What's next for the band?

We just finished an album with some covers, some remixes and some new songs. We will be working on shooting a few videos this month that will accompany the album and we're shooting for a spring release. It's looking like we'll be releasing it on our own in some modern computer-savvy-digital-generation format and touring our butts off in support of it. That's the plan!

Dusty Rhodes and the River Band play the OC Music Awards Best Live Band Showcase at The Gypsy Lounge on Feb. 16.
